Training

I offer individuals, groups and whole teams PACE training. This can help adults feel more therapeutic, connected and confident in their work, while also improving whole team understanding and have a united therapeutic approach to support the children they care for.

What is PACE?

PACE is a relationship-based and trauma-informed approach to supporting children developed within the principles of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) by Dan Hughes. PACE offers professionals, parents, carers and supportive adults a compassionate and relationship-focused framework for supporting children who have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties and disrupted relationships. Children who have experienced trauma or inconsistent caregiving often respond to stress and relationships through survival-based behaviours. Traditional approaches that focus primarily on consequences or compliance can sometimes increase shame, anxiety or disconnection.

PACE stands for:

  • Playfulness

  • Acceptance

  • Curiosity

  • Empathy

These principles help adults build safer, more trusting relationships with children and young people, particularly those who may struggle with emotional regulation, connection and feelings of safety.

PACE is not simply a behaviour management strategy. It is a way of relating to children that prioritises connection, emotional safety and understanding. The approach helps adults look beneath behaviour and consider what a child may be communicating through their emotional responses, actions and relationships.

PACE training encourages teams to move beyond asking “What is wrong with this child?” towards asking “What might this child have experienced, and what are they needing from us to help to feel safer?”
